Racers charge out of the start of the Steamboat Stampede Race.
There is something unique about Nordic skiing in Steamboat Springs that cannot be found anywhere else on the planet. Maybe it’s the trails that meander through hoar frost-covered aspen groves, or the foggy breath of horses as you silently glide by; or maybe it’s the genuine Old West flavor of the area that is noticeable even before you arrive.

If you are looking for scenic cross-country trails in the Yampa Valley, check out the Steamboat Ski Touring Center (SSTC), located along Fish Creek. SSTC offers 15K of beginner and intermediate-level Nordic bliss, groomed daily for both classic and skate skiing, and 10K of beautiful, forested snowshoe trails.

The Wiik family has owned SSTC since 1980. Sven Wiik emigrated from Sweden in 1949 to teach at Western State College. He coached the U.S. Olympic Nordic Team before moving with his wife, Birthe, and daughter, Birgitta, to Steamboat. Today, Birgitta operates the SSTC while her parents enjoy retirement.

The center hosts five to seven races per winter, but is best known for its 23- and 42K Steamboat Stampede. They also boast an affordable master’s program (only $95 for 18 weeks of individual coaching three times a week) for serious adult skiers who want to improve their technique and fitness conditioning.

The touring center offers a rental shop with all sizes of Fischer Nordic cruising skis and boots, Salomon boots and bindings, and Atlas snowshoes. There is also a complete Nordic shop with a large selection of equipment, clothing and accessories.

The SSTC ski school specializes in teaching all the basic techniques to all levels of skiers with lessons offered daily. After one lesson, you will be able to enjoy a variety of trails!

Their snack bar, The Picnic Basket, has all sorts of hearty, fresh food including hot, homemade soups, breads, hot drinks and baked goodies to refuel even the hungriest skier.

The SSTC is a member of the Steamboat Springs Nordic Council, which includes the Steamboat Springs Lake State Park, Howelson Hill and Lake Catamount Nordic centers. The Council promotes Nordic skiing in the Steamboat area through their website, www.steamboatxcski.org. The site provides daily snow reports for all of the areas with race schedules and waxing tips.
